What is Reflexology and Why Does it Hurt?

Alternative medicines and therapies have become all the rage in the last few years, with people looking for ways to find pain relief without the use of over the counter medicines. Reflexology, or zone therapy, uses the application of pressure on the hands, feet, or outer ear without the use of an oil. Although not scientifically proven, reflexology works on a system of zones and reflex areas that correspond with systems and functions of the body.

Not to be confused with acupressure, which uses 14 thin long energy lines — called meridians — that run through the length of the body, reflexologist use a carefully constructed map to pin point problem areas combined with different techniques to apply the right amount of pressure for relief. The pain involved with reflexology comes from the congestion of the reflex points and can sometimes require regular reflexology sessions to work the congestion out completely. Definitely a “must add” to your manicure or pedicure services to help soothe the stress away.
